How this compares, including when it loses

A liveaboard wellness retreat is not the right answer for everyone. Here is what it beats, what it does not, and how to tell which one you are.

Plan your journey

In short

The trade is mobility against amenity. A resort gives you a spa, a gym and a fixed bed; a liveaboard gives you a different bay every morning and the reef fifty metres off the stern. You cannot have both.

  • Against a Bali resort: mobility, not facilities
  • Against a dive liveaboard: practice, not tank count
  • Against an eco-resort: a route, not a basecamp

Liveaboard against land-based

Land-based resort
An hour or more each way by boat

Four to twelve, one group
Land-based resort
Whoever else is staying

Komodo liveaboard
A treatment room, no gym
Land-based resort
Full facilities

Connectivity

Komodo liveaboard
Almost none, by geography
Land-based resort
Full wifi

Sea conditions

Komodo liveaboard
You feel the water; some swell
Land-based resort
Not a factor

The three comparisons

What each alternative does better

Said plainly, because you will find this out anyway.

Bali luxury resorts

Better facilities, full spa and gym, reliable wifi, and no sea state to plan around. Worse access: Komodo is a flight away and every reef is a day trip.

Dive-first liveaboards

More dives per day and more advanced sites, especially in Raja Ampat. Less structure around anything that is not diving — the practice is an add-on rather than the point.

Island eco-resorts

A stronger sense of place and usually a lighter footprint. But it is one bay: what you can reach is what you can reach from that jetty.

When this is the wrong choice

Three cases where we would tell you to book something else.

  • You get seasick badly

You sleep aboard for the whole route. Medication helps, but a land-based retreat is the honest answer for severe cases.

  • You need a gym

There is a clear deck and a treatment room. There is no gym and there is not going to be one.

  • You must stay online

The park has almost no coverage. If you have to take calls, this is the wrong week to do it in.

If any of those apply, say so on the call. We would rather point you elsewhere than have you spend a week wishing you were somewhere else.
