Five criteria, weighted and published

Every vessel and every facilitator is graded the same way before it goes on a route. The weights are below so you can argue with them.

In short

A boat does not get on a route because it was available or cheap that month. It gets on because it scores, against criteria that are written down and weighted in advance.

  • Safety carries the heaviest weight, deliberately
  • Scores are reviewed, not set once and forgotten
  • A vessel that drops below the line comes off the route

The scorecard

What gets graded, and how much it counts

Five pillars. The percentages are the actual weights.

  1. 01

    Vessel integrity and maritime safety

    Certification, seaworthiness, safety equipment and crew grades. The heaviest weight on the card, because nothing else matters if this fails.

  2. 02

    Wellness programme and facilitation — 25%

    Facilitator qualifications, session structure, and whether the programme is built for the group or copied from a template.

  3. 03

    Hospitality, cuisine and comfort — 20%

    Cabins, galley, service standards and whether the boat is actually pleasant to spend a week on.

  4. 04

    Itinerary design and guide quality — 15%

    Whether the route is built around tides and light or around the operator convenience, and how good the guides are.

  5. 05

    Sustainability and local impact

    Provisioning, waste handling, park compliance and whether the money reaches Labuan Bajo.

What a low score actually does

Scoring is only worth publishing if it has consequences.

  • Below the line

    A vessel that drops below the safety threshold comes off the route immediately, mid-season if necessary.

  • Re-checked

    Scores are reviewed rather than set once. An operator that was good three years ago is not automatically good now.

  • Visible to you

    Ask which boat you are on and why it scored where it did. The answer should be specific.
